Counselling support through "The Hub":

An an educational school counsellor, I provide social-emotional support for students and their families.  Students might seek individual or small group school counsellor support for a variety of reasons:

friendships and conflict resolution with peers,
problem solving for personal life or academic-related dilemmas,
issues related to home and family life,
social skills support,
grief and loss,
addictions (prevention and intervention),
mental health needs (such as anxiety, depression, anger management, and thoughts related to self-harm).

Educational-based school counselling is focused on enhancing positive school culture, prevention, personal empowerment, and advocacy for students.  It is intended to be more short-term in nature; therefore, if more in-depth emotional support is needed for the student, I can assist families in referring to outside supports in the community, such as:

private counsellors,
Child & Youth Mental Health,
Social Workers through the Ministry of Children and Families (MCFD), and the Fraser Valley Aboriginal Child and Family Services Society (FVACFSS),
Abbotsford Community Services (ACS) and the Youth Resource Centre (YRC),
IMPACT (Drug & Alcohol Intervention and Prevention),
mentorship programs,
In It Together program,
START (Short Term, Assessment, Response, Treatment) program for students in mental health crisis.

Support and guidance can also be provided to give the family knowledge of other school-district related personnel / supports, and transition to high school programs, such as specific emotional and academic support programs in local Abbotsford secondary schools, the Bakerview Centre for Learning, and the Adolescent Day Treatment Program (ADTP) at the local hospital.

The student-counsellor relationship is confidential in nature.  Parents will be notified if there is a concern regarding the safety of self or others.
